What is the role of the Junior Leadership Team at Bishop Bridgeman?

At Bishop Bridgeman we belive in the principle of a school community: teachers, governors, children and parents.

As part of our ongoing school development, the Junior Leadership Team represents an active voice of the children within the school, thus encouraging the children to take a more pivotal role in school decision making and policy implementation.

Aims of the Junior Leadership Team

  • To provide a voice for the children within our school.
  • To encourage decision making and the active involvement of children in the life of the school.
  • To encourage a deeper understanding of the democratic approaches of discussion and decision making.
  • To create a truly inclusive body that actively informs fellow children about decisions made following democratic discussion.

JLT Selection

Children from Year 2 upwards, 2 children are selected following class elections every September. Children elected will undertake training with the school learning mentor. JLT meetings will take place weekly on Wednesday lunchtimes. JLT may invite teachers, senior leaders, Governors and parents as appropriate.  JLT will elect a chair person and vice chair to lead the meetings with the support of a teacher.

Routines

Each meeting will have an agenda established at the end of the previous meeting. Minutes of the meeting will be taken by a JLT member. Each set of minutes will be displayed in all classrooms. The JLT members will feed back to their classes within an established time.

Projects

JLT were very busy last year, they held lots of fundraising events such as the very popular summer ball.  They raised funds to create a 'JLT playbox' providing new equipment for use by Key Stage 2 at dinner times.

Voting

JLT promote British Values particular democracy and individual liberty.  Every 2 weeks JLT hold a whole school vote where all children in school have a voting token and can choose from 4 possible options.  Votes are counted by JLT and revealed in whole school assembly.  There is always an outcome from the vote such as choosing breakfast options for breakfast club, choosing winners for a school competition, voting for where our Harvest donations can go to and choosing a film to watch at dinnertimes.

JLT Disco's

JLT decided to hold a disco last October and it was so popular it has now become a termly event! Our summer ball was very popular, especially the slush machine!

Speak up, Speak out!

On Friday 22nd September 2017, JLT held our second ‘Speak up, Speak out!’ day.  JLT led assembly on that day and talked to pupils about how we should treat each other with respect and kindness.  Classes helped create our own BB school pledge that all pupils have signed to make sure that our pupils will never be a bystander.
